What is a tech refresh?

A technology refresh refers to the process of updating or replacing outdated technology within an organization. This can include hardware, software, or other IT infrastructure. The goal is to ensure that the technology in use is current, efficient, and capable of meeting the organization’s needs. This also helps with reduced productivity.

We've been asked before - "is Windows 11 better than Windows 7?" While the interface might not favorable to some, outdated operating systems are more susceptible to cyber attacks. In addition, when software and hardware have reached their 'end-of-life', users may no longer receive technical support because it's just not worth it to fix it!

Here are some key reasons to run a refresh:

  • Improved System Performance: Newer technology offers better performance and reliability.

  • Enhanced Security: Up-to-date systems are less vulnerable to security threats.

  • Cost Efficiency: Modern technology can reduce maintenance charges and improve energy efficiency.

  • Support for New Applications: Newer systems can support the latest applications and software, which might not be compatible with older technology.

How often should we do it?

The frequency for doing so can vary depending on the specific needs and goals of a business, but here are some general guidelines:

  1. Every 3-5 Years: It is recommended that refreshing IT infrastructure, including computers, servers, and other hardware, between 3 to 5 years. This helps avoid productivity loss and maintenance issues (and repair fees!).

  2. Quarterly Reviews: Some businesses incorporate periodic reviews every quarter to assess their technology needs and plan for upgrades. This proactive approach can help identify potential issues before they become critical.

  3. Signs of Wear and Tear: If you notice slower performance, frequent system crashes, or outdated software, it might be time for a tech refresh. Security vulnerabilities in old systems are also a significant concern.

  4. End-of-Life (EOL) Hardware: When hardware reaches its EOL stage and is no longer supported by the manufacturer, it’s crucial to plan for a refresh.

Regular tech refreshes can enhance productivity, improve security, and ensure your business stays competitive in a fast-paced digital landscape.
